RELATED: Follow TheCoolist Through Washington, D.C.’s Hidden Hoods The BeFunky office spans 3,000 square feet in an old truss warehouse on Portland’s northeast side. This project by Fieldwork oversaw tenant improvements throughout this interior space. Its visual character is defined by wood, both as wall coverings and visual accents throughout. Of these, the knotty, natural wood is emphasized on custom desk surfaces, wall coverings and geometric window panes. This new wood continues the industrial character of the original truss warehouse, but provides visual warmth that keeps the space inviting. The most remarkable space in the BeFunky office is its dark wooden whiskey lounge. The walls are stained to an almost burnt color, a visual character that recalls the burnt wooden barrels used to age Scotch whiskey. While it’s located just a few steps away from the main office, it feels like a different world. A good place to kick back and enjoy some relaxation away from work, and an excellent place to share a whiskey or two after hours. The BeFunky office was completed this year, continuing a line of successes by Fieldwork. They were recently named one of ten “firms to watch” by Architectural Digest, and we concur. Their use of wood in interior architecture is virtually unparalleled in 2015. Few can make such an old material look so fresh, dynamic and inventive. Hat’s off, Fieldwork!
